    A:

It depends on the specific excursion and the season, but the general answer is sturdy, comfortable, non-slip walking shoes – preferably waterproof or water-resistant.

Most Yangtze River excursions involve a mix of activities: climbing stone steps at the Three Gorges dam site, walking on unpaved paths during Shennong Stream tours, and navigating wet gangways when boarding shore tenders. In spring and autumn, rain showers are common, so damp surfaces can be slippery. For the majority of these shore trips, a pair of closed-toe walking shoes or lightweight hiking shoes with good tread is ideal. Sandals and flip-flops are not recommended for anything except lounging on the sun deck – they offer no ankle support and can be dangerous on steep, wet steps.

For the Shennong Stream or Daming River “small boat” excursions, you may need to step in and out of shallow wooden boats directly from the river bank. Here, quick-drying water shoes or sturdy sandals with a heel strap (like Keen or Merrell) can be useful, but only if the weather is dry and the water level is low. On standard 5-star ships (Century, Victoria, Viking), our crew will assist you with boarding, so you don’t need specialized gear – just shoes that won’t slide off.

    > Director’s Note: Always check the deck shoes policy – some ships require soft-soled shoes inside cabins to protect laminated floors. More importantly, never wear high heels on excursions. The decks of the ship itself can become slick after cleaning, and the gangplanks are often steep. A fall on a gangway is the most common injury we see.

If you’re traveling in the hot, humid summer (June–August), breathable mesh sneakers will keep your feet cooler, but still with a high-friction sole. Avoid leather dress shoes – they become heavy and dangerous when wet. In winter (December–February), insulated waterproof boots are best, as temperatures can drop near freezing, and morning fog makes the paths dewy.

Packing advice: bring at least two pairs of walking shoes so you can alternate if one gets wet. A small travel umbrella and a foldable poncho are also wise. We have shoe-cleaning stations on board, but no shoe dryers. For the famous “Three Gorges Cruise” shore walk at White Emperor City, you’ll climb 300+ steps – proper footwear will make the viewpoint rewarding instead of painful.

We look forward to welcoming you aboard!
