It depends on the ship’s dress code policy, but on premium Yangtze River cruises like Century and Victoria, the standard is smart casual. You do not need a tuxedo or evening gown. However, you should avoid shorts, swimwear, or flip-flops. Think of it as a nice dinner out at a mid-range restaurant back home.

On our 5-star vessels, the Captain’s Welcome Cocktail Party and Farewell Gala are the two main formal-evening-adjacent events. For men: long trousers (chinos or dark jeans without rips), a collared shirt (polo or button-down), and closed-toe shoes. A blazer is optional but appreciated. For women: a sundress, a blouse with slacks, or a smart skirt. Heels are fine, but remember you are on a moving ship—block heels or wedges are more practical than stilettos. The atmosphere is celebratory but relaxed; you will see everything from crisp linen to silk blouses, but never beachwear.

> Director’s Note: The Yangtze is a working river, not a Caribbean cruise. We do not have black-tie nights. If you pack one jacket and one dress, you’ll be perfectly dressed for both the cocktail party and the daily shore excursion. Also, the air conditioning on board can be cool in the evenings, so a light wrap or sweater is a smart addition.

Please note that some smaller or older sister ships may have a slightly more casual standard, but in general, the cruise director will announce the dress code in the daily program. If you are unsure, err on the side of slightly nicer casual—you’ll feel at ease in the lounge before dinner.
