It depends on the season and the weather, but for a sunset cruise on the Yangtze, the smart rule is to dress in light, comfortable layers—and always bring a windproof jacket or sweater, even in summer.

The Yangtze River gorge areas create their own microclimate. Even on a warm afternoon, once the sun dips behind the cliffs, temperatures can drop sharply. On our Century and Victoria ships, the sunset-viewing areas are on the open top decks or the bow. That means you will feel windchill, especially as the ship moves. In spring and autumn, I strongly recommend a fleece or lightweight down vest. In summer (June–August), a long-sleeved cotton shirt and a light scarf are enough. In winter (December–February), you need a warm coat, gloves, and a hat—the damp river cold can be biting.

We ask guests to avoid formal or overly dressy attire for sunset. This is not a gala dinner. Most passengers wear smart casual: polo shirts, blouses, khakis, or dark jeans. Heels are a safety concern on the outdoor deck gratings and stairs, so please wear flat, non-slip shoes. The ship’s crew will often serve complimentary Champagne or Chinese tea during sunset, and the captain may make a brief welcome announcement—so you’ll want to look neat but be comfortable.
