Q: What currency is used on board?

It depends on the ship.

On the majority of our modern, internationally-managed vessels (including the Century Series and newer Victoria Cruises ships), the primary onboard currency is the US Dollar ($). All incidental charges, such as bar bills, spa services, gift shop purchases, and premium excursions, will be settled to your onboard account in USD. Your account is typically settled at the end of the cruise, and payment can be made with a major credit card (Visa, MasterCard, American Express are widely accepted) or in USD cash. This system is in place for consistency and to accommodate our many international guests from North America, Europe, and Australia.

There is an important exception for some ships operating primarily for the domestic Chinese market. Older or more budget-oriented vessels that cater almost exclusively to local travelers may operate entirely in Chinese Renminbi (RMB/CNY). On these ships, all pricing, billing, and payments will be in RMB. It is crucial to confirm the specific currency policy for your booked ship at the time of reservation. Regardless of the ship, for purchases in port or from independent vendors during shore excursions, you will need local Chinese currency (RMB).

> Director's Note: A standard service charge or gratuity is applied to all international-standard cruises. This is a daily per-person fee that covers the service team. On USD-operated ships, this charge is in dollars and is automatically added to your onboard account. Policies are clearly outlined in your cruise documents.

My practical advice is to always carry a small amount of US Dollars in cash for onboard flexibility, even if you plan to use a card for the final settlement. For RMB, I recommend exchanging a modest amount for port visits before you board, as exchange rates at hotel or airport kiosks are often less favorable than in your home country. Onboard currency exchange, if available, will have limited hours and rates. Clarifying the onboard currency when you book will allow you to prepare perfectly and avoid any confusion.
